Ain't that bad? AIN'T THAT BAD!?!?!?

This is by far the chewiest record I own. Yes, it is bad. GOOD bad and BAD bad! I wish I knew more about it other than it came out on a subsidiary of Juggy Murray's Sue Records out of New York, and I picked my copy up for a dollar, I think. At least I better have, as I discovered a hairline crack in it.... Now that's bad.

Straight outta the Destiny City (to the unschooled, that's Tacoma, WA) comes this moody funk gem on the Valane label from the regionally popular band Jonah's Whale. They were a force in the both the Tacoma and the Kona, Hawaii music scenes for a time until finally disbanding in the early nineties. I've had the pleasure and honor of befriending and actually gigging with a few of the founding members of Jonah's Whale, those being Billy Barner (drums), who happens to have a beautiful website with an archive of cool old pics of Jonah's Whale here, Mike "Uncle Funky" Jones (keyboards), the man is a monster on the keys, and Michael "Stubbs" Stubblefield (bass), who I used to jam with a lot at the now-defunct Cole's Oasis in nearby Ruston, WA when I was a snot-nosed punk. I picked this 45 up from my friend Jeff's record store and couldn't believe my eyes! I'd never seen a Jonah's Whale release in all my digging days, and haven't seen another copy since. Now you all can enjoy "Feelin' Loose" (which later became "Gettin' Loose" according to Billy Barner), because it makes you tuff! Now, if you don't mind, click on the label and let that Tacoma funk loose!

Frog Eyes

This being my first post (WITH SOUND AND PICS!!!!) I thought I'd make it a mother! If this don't peel the paint off the walls, I don't know what will. Organist Terrell Prude comes through with the funky (so damn funky even my lady had to say so) "Frog-Eyes" on Ray Charles' own Tangerine label. Don't get it discombobulated, this is not your typical breakbeat-style funk track, this is down-and-dirty Hammond B3 funk, and the drummer's just drivin' it into the ground like my Aunt Kathy did with that '83 Chevy Citation. Tasty guitar break from God-knows-who, too! Break out the cheap wine, the dominoes and crank up your hi-fi, 'cause it's a party!

I'll be posting my first mix soon...... Click on the pic above to hear this track.

A new day.....

So I finally listened to my longtime buddy Ash Rivera (shouts out to handpanther.blogspot.com) and got my own damn blogspot in which to toast and tickle your ears with my record collection, which some folks say is deep. I'm imagining full-meal mixes will be had for hungry ears, as well as single songs and label scans for you geeks to sample as well. I'm not in this to boast how I have the rarest records, no, a lot of times you'll see major label releases that never made it at all, and sometimes you'll hear familiar voices sing not-so-familiar songs! It's all in having fun and partying, not sitting there on your ass and stroking your chin. So do enjoy what I have to offer, and if you can't dig it, well, you ain't got the right shovel or you got a hole in your soul, baby!
